Unesco recognition for Belgian chip shops?

10:34 27/11/2014

The Belgian chip shop culture is on its way to being recognised by Unesco. The three language communities in Belgium have submitted a joint application to the United Nations heritage organisation to have the long-standing Belgian tradition of eating at the chip shop recognised as world heritage.

Flanders gave regional cultural heritage status to its fritkots earlier this year, and the French- and German-speaking communities quickly followed suit. Now the three communities are united in hoping for international recognition from Unesco, which would bring extra money into the sector, according to Belgian media.

The chip shop tradition is unique in Belgium, say Belgian chip shop owners, and one of the few things that everyone in the country can agree on: “Eating chips from the chippy evokes joy, nostalgia and security."

I do hope Unesco has the good sense to refuse to do this.

That is if they want any respect for such recognition in future. They are junk food outlets that make McDonalds look like a health food shop.

Mmmmmmm-Mora! What on earth is in that crap?!

@Mikek1 - Talking of crap: what on earth are people, with your level of fine feeling and probably fine dining, doing in an abject place like this, instead of heading the Unesco, and other highly moral institutions, anyway?
