Hôtel Métropole renovation gets green light

The Brussels region has granted planning permission for the renovation of the famous Hôtel Métropole, according to the capital’s secretary for heritage and urban planning, Ans Persoons.

Originally inaugurated in 1895, the Métropole has been closed since 2020 but plans to reopen its doors at the end of 2025 after a major renovation that aims to restore it to its former glory.

“With its history and heritage features combining Art Nouveau, Art Deco and modern style, this hotel is one of the legendary landmarks of 19th-century Europe, which still contributes to our collective identity today,” said Persoons.

“Following in the footsteps of the Hôtel Astoria, Mix Brussels at the former Royale Belge and The Hoxton in the Victoria Tower, we are demonstrating that heritage, architecture and the hotel industry can combine perfectly to become new assets for Brussels.”

Located on Place de Brouckère, the hotel plans to restore its facades, listed and unlisted interior spaces, and its lighting.

The interior spaces include 267 rooms, all of which will be renovated. The plans also include the installation of a swimming pool and spa, the "enhancement of the hotel's heritage", contemporary interior design and the creation of green terraces.

The renovation will also focus on technical improvements to make the hotel more sustainable and energy-efficient.

This will be done not only through the use of innovative technologies and installations, but by choosing environmentally-friendly and reusable materials for the renovation, the insulation of facades and the replacement of window frames.

The owner is collaborating closely with Brussels’ urban and heritage departments to ensure the hotel’s renovation is done in line with and in respect to its historical significance and appearance.
