SNCB to invest €80 million in Brussels South station

10:25 21/04/2016

Belgian railway company SNCB will invest €80 million in the renovation of Brussels South station, announced minister-president Rudi Vervoort in the Brussels parliament. Mobility and public works minister Pascal Smet reacted with disappointment, calling the investment “substandard”, according to Bruzz.

In addition to the renovation of the platforms in Brussels South station, the investment also includes work on the inside of the station. The plans are not very specific when it comes to the outside of the building, as revealed during a discussion on the master plan for the station, which was approved by the Brussels government earlier this year.

According to Smet, the station calls for a much larger investment. "This amount is insufficient to fully address the inside of the station," he says in a press release. "Also, there seems to be no plan or funding yet to thoroughly address the outside of the building. This is particularly unfortunate because, as Belgium's busiest international train station, Brussels South represents the entire country."
