Rue Neuve most popular shopping street

11:03 19/09/2013

Rue Neuve remains the most popular shopping street in Brussels with a daily average of 43,000 visitors. The Chaussée d'Ixelles and Rue des Fripiers complete the top three with 31,200 and 28,200 passersby per day, respectively. This is evident from the third Atrium barometer of market sentiment based on research by the regional agency for trade.

Rue Neuve is certainly the most boring shopping street in Brussels. The design of the street itself is everything but shopper friendly.
Where are the benches for the poor male attachments to gather strength to carry all the bags their women accumulate during a shopping day?
Where are the little coffee places, the rain covers, the home delivery station which delivers all your shopping bags to your door so you can happily use the metro or bus instead of a car?
Maybe Brussels should look towards Antwerp and learn ;-)

Keep on pedestrianizing streets in Brussels, and they will all fare well - and the existing ones will become less crowded. We need to continue rue Neuve and rue des Fripiers into rue du Midi and rue du Marché au Charbon until place Fontainas. And do pedestrianize chaussée de Louvain, and place de la Bourse together with rue Orts until rue Dansaert with its wide pavements ! Look at the Parvis de Saint-Gilles, now fully pedestrianized - a new gem in Brussels. True rue Neuve needs a facelift - easy now that you have the model of rue des Fripiers as a basis and/or place Rogier coming up...
