Question

Hi Everyone,

Wondering if someone can advise me on what to do in this situation, I am 36 and have been working in IT security for a company in Brussels for 7 years. I got forced into a job i did not want I am contemplating quitting my job in order to train for what i want which is web development, i should have enough funds to last me for 2 years.

I would really appreciate any advice during this frustrating period in my life.

What is your frustration about? some people don't have funds to last them for a day !

Quit your job and follow your dream. You said you have funds to last you for two years. Can you not train whilst working? I know you hate your job, but if you know that it will not be for much longer, can you not be patient? we all hate doing something ;-)

Hi Isabella,

Thanks for your message, i have tolerated this job and the work environment long enough, i have devised a career plan via a mind map.

If i stay in this job i will not be focused, my mind will be everywhere, i will wait after my summer holidays, then i will give my boss my resignation letter come September, i look forward to seeing his face once i give him the letter :)

Rather than just resign, Give your boss the option of giving you a web development job.

Play your cards right, and you'll get retrained first and get some experience, and you can bugger off a year or 2 down the line.

Where i work thats not going to happen, plus the work environment where i work is toxic and negative i need to get out of there before i suffer from depression.

In general I think its right to follow ones dream if one can manage to do that.

There is one trap to be careful of though in your situation.

You hate your job. You like the idea of being a web developer.
Don't think that by leaving your job and following the idea of being a web developer that automatically life will be dramatically different and good.

When we feel unhappy we tend to hook on to some dream that will turn our life around. The truth is that life is complex.

Separate the two things in your mind. Yes maybe its right to get out of the job. Yes maybe you should pursue being a web developer. But you could learn to be a web developer without leaving your job if you really really wanted to.

So think separately about the current job and the web developer dream.

Look at all the options.

Also, don't overestimate the impact of your letter of resignation on your boss. Don't let the anticipation of that satisfaction be a factor in your decision. Its much too important for that approach.

If you have worked in Brussels for 7 years why not take temps credit and a sabbatical that is even still "paid" - well I should say supplemented - by ONEM? your employer can't really refuse your request for taking temps credit...

Its true that life is not all peaches and roses, it will be hard but i will be ok, staying with my current employer is not an option for me, whatever i will learn i will not use.

In life to get what you want you have to take risks or you will become an average jo trapped in Dogma. As a wise man once said:

"It’s better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing, than a long life spent in a miserable way."
