Women outnumber men in Belgium’s public courts

12:07 26/01/2015

For the first time in Belgium, the majority of public prosecutors and court judges are women, a number that is expected to continue to increase, as 60% of law students at the Universities of Leuven and Ghent are women, report Het Nieuwsblad and Het Gazet van Antwerpen.

Female public prosecutors and judges are in the majority in Belgium, with women accounting for about 56% of the prosecutors and 57% of the judges, according to the latest figures from the federal justice department.

The figures indicate that the distribution of women in the federal justice system will continue to rise in their favour because currently about 60% of the law students at both KU Leuven and Ghent University are women.

The newspapers point out, however, that men still make up the majority in the Court of Appeal, the Court of Cassation and the public prosecutor's office.
