Women outnumber men in Belgium

12:28 13/02/2015

On 1 January, 2015, there were exactly 11,190,845 registered inhabitants in Belgium. The official population statistics published by the FPS Economy show that Flanders has about 6.5 million inhabitants, compared with 3.5 million in Wallonia and 1.2 million in Brussels. The statistics also reveal that there are about 200,000 more women than men living in the country, reports VRT news.

In addition to the disproportionate number of women versus men, the statistics reveal a number of other interesting facts about Belgians. The average Belgian is 41 years old, but there are major geographical differences. The oldest populations are all found in coastal municipalities. Koksijde, with an average age of 52, has the oldest population in the country. The oldest Belgian is 116 years old and lives in Antwerp.

The municipalities with the youngest average population are found in and around the capital, with seven of the ten youngest municipalities located in the Brussels-Capital Region. The youngest municipality is Brussels’ Saint-Josse-ten-Node, with an average age of 33 years.
