What's on this week: 6-13 May

A long weekend! Food trucks, opera and the Brussels region's annual festival

As the name suggests, Brussels’ Living Room Festival is a domestic affair. Each edition plants itself in a new neighbourhood, preferably far from the capital’s tourist hotspots and power centres. So this 14th edition takes place in Anderlecht, specifically its Scheut district (served by metro via Jacques Brel station). Ten residents volunteer to host concerts in their houses. Performers include Congolese singer Fredy Massamba, Italian folk music ensemble DisCanto (pictured) and Brazilian percussion trio Ritmus Project. Festival-goers must reserve an itinerary online.

Discover the lesser-known parts of Brussels during Welcome Brussels, when many places not usually open to the public will reveal their secrets. Among the many activities are a two-hour guided tour in Evere, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Schaerbeek or Saint-Josse and a bike ride through Evere cemetery to the mill for a cooking workshop. Registration required.

Moroccan dancer and choreographer Taoufiq Izeddiou is one of the people most responsible for the development of contemporary dance in his homeland. His first dance experience at five was also a spiritual one as it was a sufi ritual that his mother had expressly forbidden him to participate in. He is still separating religion from spirituality in his work and he uses traditional as well as contemporary instruments to explore the intersection of two cultures and two musics. As part of the Charleroi Danses participation in the Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Taoufiq Izeddiou creates his new dance En Alerte.

Du Bartas, a swinging five-piece group from the South of France, present their latest album, Cinc, a sultry mix of Mediterranean folk with Moroccan and Brazilian influences.

Opera houses across Europe open their doors with free activities, tours, workshops, rehearsals and more on European Opera Days. Brussels’ La Monnaie hosts a debate, picnic and numerous performances.

The food truck scene is exploding in Brussels - and this weekend the city welcomes the third edition of its yearly Food Truck Festival, which claims to be the biggest of its kind in the world. To coincide with the Fête de l'Iris - the Brussels region's festival with street entertainment and concerts - 140 trucks selling food from around the world will set up shop in the Parc de Bruxelles, with 150,000 visitors expected.
