What is the legal age in Brussels or Flanders for children to stay home alone?

Question

As far as I know, In Flanders you can only leave a child 15 minutes unattended at home under the age of 12. However, this is an information I heard not read. So I appreciate if you could share if you have the relevant information.

Thanks

They are considered to be capable of looking after themselves at 12.

Below that age, I doubt whether anyone is going to stand there with a stopwatch but 15 minutes gives a flavour of the sort of time that they could be left unattended without anyone worrying unless they are very young.

There is no legal age for leaving children unattended. Remember children go to school alone in big numbers by age 10 here and are left unsupervised at school atuch younger ages.

Only a 12 year old with issues or learning difficulties could not be left unattended at home.

I think this 15 minutes mean you can go to the corner shop but you cannot leave them alone for long times.

There is no 15 minutes rule. There is no rule.

How can there be no rule? What if there is a fire when children are alone at home? There should be a rule that parents are responsible or not. A friend heard this 15 minutes rule from Linkebeek commune where they live.

There is no rule. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean someone needs to make a rule.

The law is that children must be under the responsibility of a adult, not that they must be at all times with an adult.

You can search high and low for this supposed rule but it does not exist.

If it did exist, then schools would be flaunting it with their children every second of their time with their students. Children are left at school without their parents, they are left unsupervised in school, inside classrooms and in playgrounds as well. This happens even with under 5s. It also happens in people's homes, you know parents go to the toilet and leave their babies in the living room for example! It's still unattended.

Maybe Drifter will finally now accept there is no age or time law!
