Wallonia provides one-fifth of Flanders’ water supply

10:13 24/02/2015

Wallonia supplies Flanders with about one-fifth of its total annual water demand. But according to Walloon environment minister Carlo Di Antonio (CDH), Flanders intends to become more independent of Walloon sources in the coming years, reports Knack.

Wallonia supplies Flanders with about 80 million cubic metres of water annually, which equates to about one-fifth of the region's total need, according to figures provided by MP Jean-Luc Crucke (MR) at Di Antonio’s request.

According to Di Antonio, Flanders’ plans to become "partly independent of Walloon sources" could have a large impact on the water supply operators and subsequently the Walloon regional budget.

Di Antonio is therefore urging Wallonia to establish partnerships with neighbouring regions. The Brussels-Capital Region, which also imports water from Wallonia, has already shown its willingness to consult on the matter.

Why on earth does it make sense, if indeed there is adequate capacity in Belgium as a whole, to invest in creating more capacity just so that Flanders can be independent. Belgium cannot afford such wasteful spending!
