Wage watchers: How much does a technician earn?

16:50 13/10/2014

Jens Vandenberghe, 23, from Zwevegem, is starting early to save for his own house.

What do you do for work?
I work as a technician in the company JTI-Gryson in Wervik. In October 2013, I began at the company as a vacation job after I finished my studies. In December, I got the chance to join the team permanently.

As a technician, I work here during the day on many different projects. Right now, I’m busy developing a system for “spare parts”. I’m making a scanning system that automatically generates what is available in stock and what needs to be ordered from suppliers.

Do you like your job?
I really like my job. It’s very diverse: I work both in the production department and at a desk. It also suits my personality in the sense that technical challenges have always attracted me. I learn something new every day.

The appreciation that I get for my work also motivates me. What’s also good is that I work in a young, dynamic team with a nice atmosphere. A further advantage to my job is that the it’s very close to where I live.

What do you think of your salary?
I’m satisfied with my salary of €1,800 a month. If you look at the current labour market and the number of people out of work, I’m lucky that I was able to get a job right after graduating.

How many hours do you work per week?
I work from 8.00 to 16.30, but, depending on the project, I often work more hours than that.

Do you save money?
I’m saving for my own house and for a car.

What will you absolutely not spend money on?
My priority is to save for a house. So I won’t waste money buying unnecessary things.

What do you like spending money on?
Travelling, clothes, food, relaxing and hobbies.

What would you do if you won the lottery?
First, I’d drink a celebratory glass, but then I’d invest in businesses. I would never stop working, because I think that it’s important that you feel good and you have to have something to do in your daily life.
