Wage watchers: How much does a library job for a University of Antwerp student earn?

16:45 09/06/2015
We asked Julie, 23, from Borgerhout how much she earns and how she spends it.

What do you do for work?
I’m working on an Advanced Masters in European and international law at the Free University (VUB) in Brussels. Since I spent five years in the library of the University of Antwerp, it sounded nice to take a little job there. My task is to sort the books in the Law section and put them in their right places.

Do you like you job?
Absolutely! I know the library like the back of my hand, and I really like helping new students find their way. Some even think I’m a permanent employee. I’ve really become part of the furniture. Sometimes it annoys me that there are some students that don’t show much respect, but luckily they are the minority.

How many hours do you work per week?
Last year I worked four hours per week, because I also worked weekends at another part-time job. Since then, I’ve given that job up, so now I’m working eight hours per week in the library. And sometimes I cover other people’s shifts.

What do earn and what do you think of this salary?
I earn €70 per week. For a student’s job it’s definitely good. It’s in line with what I can expect as a student and fair for the work I do. I’m satisfied.

Do you save?
I try to save as much as I can, but a lot of my money goes to daily life. I live together with my boyfriend and try to be as independent as I can, so it’s not always easy to set something aside. On top of that, we love a good outing. So we always try to find good value for money.

What are your biggest expenses?
Rent, groceries, going out…

What do you hate spending money on?
Technological gadgets and luxury products don’t interest me at all.

What do you like spending money on?
Travelling!

What would you do if you won the lottery?
Lots of things: I’d take a round-the-world trip, buy a house, buy a car, set up my family and friends for life…one way or another, the money would be spent.
