Wage Watchers: How much does a freelance translator earn?

15:32 28/12/2013
Translator Els Peleman, 34, from Herentals talks about what she earns and how she spends it.

What do you do?
I started work as a translator at an agency since 2001, and in 2005 I became a freelancer in addition to my regular job. I translate mainly French and German texts into Dutch. I get all kinds of texts: technical papers, legal files, press articles. I also edit the work of other translators.
About a year ago, I switched to full-time freelancing. Doing both the job and working as a freelancer left me with no free time. That’s when I decided to make the jump. As a freelancer, you have more freedom, and you can concentrate on specific themes. You make up your own timetable, and you’re solely responsible for the quality of the work.

Are you happy with the pay?
I earn €2,500 per month net. I’m pretty happy, yes. In the beginning I was rather anxious as to whether I’d be able to live from my freelance activities alone. Of course your income fluctuates – one week is not like the next. But in the end I was pleasantly surprised.

Do you have any additional perks as someone who is self-employed?
No, but you do have the freedom to decide for yourself how you’re going to fill the day, and that’s more important for me.

Would you take another full-time job if it meant more pay?
No. Looking back, I should have taken this step to freelancing earlier. Of course it’s a major step.

Are you able to save every month?
I try to put some money aside. Part of it is for taxes because it only becomes clear later on how much you owe the taxman. Aside from that, I try to save for renovations to our house or for a trip or an evening out from time to time.

What’s your biggest expense?
At the moment, social security contributions for the extra pension for the self-employed, and taxes. Apart from that, there’s the expense of fitting out my office, as well as the purchase of software.

What do you enjoy spending money on?
Shopping and eating out.

What do you prefer not to spend money on?
Useless things and complicated tech gadgets. I have more than enough with a laptop and a smartphone.
