VUB wants to offer more classes in English

11:35 31/03/2014

For the first time, Belgium’s universities and colleges have released a joint statement in the run up to the elections on May 25. In this way they hope to make their demands clear to future decision-makers in Flanders, Brussels and the federal government.

In its ‘Memorandum 2014-2019’, The Free University of Brussels (VUB) outlines why its educational future requires an increase in funding and a relaxation of the current language rules. The VUB also calls for the introduction of a Brussels Minister of Student Affairs, reports VUB rector Paul De Knop.

One of the VUB’s most important pleas is for a relaxation of the language requirements so that more courses can be taught in English, hence strengthening the university’s international character.

“The VUB has a vision, concrete plans and a lot of ambition," said Rector De Knop. "But all too often we encounter financial, legal and institutional obstacles. We want to convince the new governments of Brussels, Flanders and Belgium that it is in their interest to take our grievances to heart."

The ULB is also the Free University of Brussels, just the Francophone counterpart. This article is confusing. Is it referring to Flemish schools only or does it include French-speaking universities as well?
" For the first time, Belgium’s universities and colleges have released a joint statement in the run up to the elections on May 25"
"Flanders, Brussels and the federal government".
What happened to the rest or is this trying to convey some sort of (political) message?

I completely agree..... Does the ULB support this position?

Education is a community competence and as the Francophone Community isn't mentioned, it probably hasn't issued a statement yet so while the Brussels region or the federal government can support the VUB to add political pressure, they, and thus also the French-speaking universities, are not obliged to follow suit.
