Video: Brussels reacts to Donald Trump presidential victory

09:23 09/11/2016

Partygoers stayed up all night in Brussels to watch the results on a big screen - as Donald Trump secured victory over Hillary Clinton to become the 45th president of the United States.

After months of polling in Clinton's favour, Trump's win came down to a handful of crucial swing states.

"As Republicans we would have liked to see almost anyone else as our candidate," Mike Kulbickas of Republicans Abroad told The Bulletin at a sold-out election night party in downtown Brussels, organised with the American Club of Brussels.

"There are certain indicators that he could make good decisions. People that know him well personally tell me that he's a good man."

What went wrong for Clinton? "The main issue with the campaign is we didn't stick to the issues," says Sandrine Dixson-Declève from Democrats Abroad.

Stock markets in Asia and Australia took a hit early on Wednesday morning as news of a potential Trump presidency emerged - and the Dow Jones is forecast to lose 800 points when it opens later today.

Dave Deruytter, head of expat services at ING bank, says: "The fact that Donald Trump has come so far … he will have a lasting influence on democracy, on elections, on markets."

I watched one of Clinton's campaign speeches. She was all Kumbaya, kissy-huggy, just like a candidate in the 1960's. She dissed Trump and dissed and dismissed his supporters. She didn't address them or their concerns. Her attitude was arrogant and she was like a wind-up doll, not a person.
I am horrified that Trump has won, but am not surprised. After I saw - and heard - Hillary in action, I realised he had a real chance of winning.

A Clinton, arrogant? Can't think why. I wonder if Trump is going to free Americans? Americans are currently the property of the US government and we are paying millions in order to hunt down US property. FATCA.
