Uplace to create more than 3,000 jobs, study shows

05:42 16/11/2015

The arrival of the new shopping complex Uplace in Machelen will lead to the creation of 3,249 new permanent jobs, according to a study by the University of Cambridgde. The two-year construction phase is expected to provide work for as many 5,627 people, the study shows.

According to Uplace, the study takes into account the possible loss of jobs in local shops. "3,249 is an estimate," Uplace's Laura Van Waeyenberghe told brusselnieuws.be. "In addition to an anticipated population increase in the area, the study also takes into account negative factors such as job relocations and modest retail margins."

The study shows that the new complex will have an overall positive economic impact, as it is expected to lead to strong population growth in the area around Machelen, north of Brussels. That should lead to increased consumption, and a further rise in the demand for shopping and leisure opportunities in the surrounding towns and cities over the coming years.

Uplace is set to become one of the largest employers in Flemish Brabant, after Brussels Airport, according to the study. The job creation is expected to represent a wide range of sectors, from maintenance staff to management positions in retail and hospitality.
