Unaccompanied children

Question

At what age may a child legally be left to walk home from school on their own in Belgium?

S

I suppose it depends on some extent to the age of the child and the distance and traffic conditions involved, although there must be a minimum.  However, I have been told that 12 is the minimum age at which children can take the inter-city trains unaccompanied, so that might be a useful benchmark. I'm sure others will have more precise information.
