ULB students chain themselves to trees in protest

11:25 22/10/2014

ULB students and local residents of Ixelles/Elsene on Wednesday morning chained themselves to trees on the university campus, reports Brusselnieuws.be. A contractor began felling the trees on Tuesday to prepare the lot for the controversial real estate project, Universalis Park.

The real estate project involves the construction of nearly 100,000m² of housing, including about 8,000 m² of student flats. The activists criticise the fact that the project’s main aim is the development of luxury apartments and not enough affordable housing for students.

The activists have organised similar protests since August, under the name, ‘Sauver la Plaine’ (Save the Square), as the project would mean the end of the largest green space in the Brussels municipality of Ixelles/Elsense.

What a disgrace. Where else in the world would a developer be allowed to build luxury housing on the campus of a public university? The ULB is not a local community college but a national institution - it is absurd that the parochial interests of the Ixelles municipal government should override the needs and concerns of the university, its students and faculty.

Savings, by all means. But not in the education sector, please!
