Uber free in Brussels until Sunday
The controversial taxi service Uber is offering its services free of charge in Brussels from today, Thursday, at 10.00 until 6.00 Sunday morning. Uber is offering such a service in view of Brussels’ ongoing Mobility Week, said its manager Filip Nuytemans on Wednesday.
The taxi platform communicated that it is now considering diversifying its activities in Brussels into other transport sectors, as it has already done in New York. “But at this stage our main priority will be on building up our most important product, namely the transport of people,” said Nuytemans.
Local unions are not in favour of the Uber app branching out into new sectors such as couriering packages or transporting foodstuffs and warn app users about using a taxi service with inadequate insurance for passengers.
This claim has been denied by Uber. “Uber provides additional insurance to drivers who are part of the network so that passengers are covered by insurance in an accident.”
