Two down, one to go: New elephant baby at Planckendael

12:00 15/01/2018

The second elephant birth in three weeks has taken place at Planckendael animal park in Mechelen. Following the Christmas Day baby girl belonging to May Tagu, a baby boy has been born to Kai-Mook.

The baby, who was born on Saturday, weighs 100 kilos, is in good health and is being well looked-after by Kai-Mook and the rest of the herd. Kai-Mook is Belgium’s most famous elephant as she was the first elephant to ever be born in the country. She was born in 2009.

The mother of both May Tagu and Kai-Mook, Phyo-Phyo, is also expecting and is due this summer. The father of all three babies is Chang, who is part of a breeding programme and is now in Copenhagen.

The public can help name the new baby once three nominations are chosen by Planckendael staff. All babies born in Planckendael this year will have names starting with a “T”.

Visitors can already get a glimpse of Kai-Mook’s baby at Planckendael, which is open seven days a week.
