Tunnel rapid response team to start work in 2018

23:10 16/10/2017

A rapid response team for handling accidents in Brussels' ageing road tunnels will now not be ready to start work until next year.

The new team had been announced by the region's mobility minister Pascal Smet in September 2016 and was due to enter service this year.

Its task would be to arrive quickly on the scene of breakdowns and road accidents and, where possible, clear the way for traffic to avoid long jams.

The service's launch has now been delayed until 2018, Smet said in a written response to a parliamentary question, because of administrative problems.

New rules on putting publicly funded work out to private tender have meant that the original invitation for bids has to be rewritten and republished.
