Travel document for a newborn

Question

Hello,
Our baby will be born in summer in Belgium and we would like to leave the country as soon as possible after the birth to return to our home country (an EU Member State). As obtaining our national travel document for the baby would take at least 6 weeks, which is too long, I was wondering if there is a possibility for foreigners (EU nationals) to obtain a Belgian travel document sooner than that.
Thanks in advance for shedding some light on this.

You need a travel document issued by the state of which the baby is a citizen (which will only be Belgium IF the baby is entitled to NO other nationality through its parents).

In theory, if you are unable to obtain normal travel documents (i.e. a passport or photo ID card) through the state concerned, you should be able to obtain emergency travel documentation from the consular service of the state concerned but I do wonder whether that would be possible in practice.

Thanks, Becasse. Not very encouraging news, but that's what I suspected.

It's actually with the emergency travel document that you need 6 weeks in our case (getting a passport would take even longer...). Getting the citizenship done is what makes up the bulk of the time unfortunately.

Hi momtobe I would ring your embassy and seek clarification from them, on this my son we got a passport pretty fast via the embassy here when he was born although was a long time ago. Even the UK which allegedly had issues with new passports the return time on a renewal application wasn't as long as they said on their website last year. Also be aware infants it's not advised to fly for a week at least one week after birth all the best with your new arrival and if you've not joined I would highly recommend the Bct to all new parents

I think you should be careful flying a baby that young. Wait a couple of months before you fly a baby. Passport time is 6 weeks. Do not rush for travelling before making sure of the well-being of the baby.

You should not fly with a baby less than 2 months old because of the high pressure. If you cannot reach your destination by car in two-three hours, better wait a while.
