Train ticket prices to Brussels Airport going up

11:15 20/01/2014

The one-way fee to Brussels Airport is set to jump to € 5.07 on February 1, marking a 14% increase from the current supplement of € 4.44, after the decision was officially adopted by the federal government Friday.

The increased supplement, which is added to the price of a normal train ticket to Zaventem, is a result of the Diabolo connection that runs along the Brussels-Mechelen-Antwerp line. Previously, access to the airport originated only from Brussels North Station.  Although the new line has benefited travelers arriving from the north, cutting their travel time to the airport in half, it has come at a cost.

The private-public partnership that completed the line spent roughly €678 million. To cover the expense, travelers are being made to contribute through the fee added to the price of tickets.  However, a prediction of 2.2 million passengers along the line in 2013 came up short. With only 1.68 million travelers, a solution had to be found to compensate the 24% difference.

Interesting to see no reports in the press on the increase to €35 a day to park in Zuidstation/Midi in Brussels from 01/01/2014. For rail travellers, especially those leaving early and returning late from Paris or London this price increase (up 20% since 2012) is very painful. The carpark is managed by Q-Park but surely SNCB / NMBS have some input into pricing.

it is at least €10 per day more expensive than Zaventem airport and €15 more expensive than parking next to Antwerp Centraal.

Is it an attempt to exploit "richer" international travellers?
