Top titles for Goffin and Thiam

22:00 24/12/2017

Liège-born tennis player David Goffin has become the first Belgian in the tournament’s 48-year history to reach the final of the ATP World Tour Finals.

Goffin beat the world’s two top-ranked players, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, to make it to the final in London, where he lost to Bulgaria’s Grigor
Dimitrov.

The number seven-ranked player then headed to Lille, to represent Belgium in the Davis Cup final against France. While Goffin won his leg against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Frenchman Lucas Pouille beat Belgium’s Steve Darcis in the decisive match of the final.

Meanwhile, Olympic and world heptathlon champion Nafi Thiam of Namur was named female athlete of the year at the IAAF Athletics Award 2017 in Monaco.

Thiam won the Female Rising Star Award in 2016 after winning the Olympic heptathlon title. She followed this up in 2017 by claiming the World Championship title in London.
