Three years of repair work for Leopold II tunnel

22:13 24/01/2018

Brussels' longest road tunnel - Leopold II - will undergo three years of renovation works starting this May.

Road closures will be limited to weekday nights, except every July and August when the tunnel will be closed completely.

Asbestos needs to be removed and 17 new emergency exits built to make the tunnel comply with European fire safety standards. The works - at a total cost of €463 million - also include new lighting, signage, ventilation and cameras.

The 2.6km Leopold II tunnel was built in 1986 to link Koekelberg basilica with the inner Brussels ring at Sainctelette. Diversions will be confirmed closer to the time and extra public transport made available.

The renovation is part of a Brussels-wide plan to improve the city's aging tunnels. Work has already been done at Montgomery, Stéphanie and Rogier, and roadworks on four of the six Reyers tunnels at Diamant began this month.
