Taxi associations demand ban on Uber

12:43 13/07/2015

The Belgian Taxi Federation (FeBeT) will send an ultimatum to the federal and Brussels governments requesting they put a stop to the alternative taxi service Uber by 1 September, announced the federation president Khalid Ed-Denguir.

FeBeT has threatened to carry out multiple strike actions in early September should the governments not take heed, with a national demonstration tentatively planned for 16 September.

"In other countries, the governments have taken their responsibility," said Ed-Denguir on metrotime.be. "After the demonstration in France in late June, for example, Uber was banned. Likewise, the governments of Spain, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands have opposed Uber. In Belgium, however, Uber drivers continue to work illegally."

It's time to break up the Taxi cartels - including in Belgium. The system where the airport taxis can only take passengers from the airport and then drive back empty (and vice versa for the non-airport taxis)....How does that help the public (or the environment)? If it takes Uber to break up these cartels, so be it. When you charge €50 from the airport to Ixelles, you shouldn't be too astonished that someone else comes along with a better idea. And now the taxi cartels want protection? Let's see if the government has the stomach for that.....

Uber is not banned everywhere - in fact they just won a legal challenge in Toronto. It seems this article is where the picture for the Bulletin post came from...
