Taxes on Bitcoin (cryptocurrencies)

Question

Hi,

where would I be able to get a definitive answer as to whether there are taxes on holding Bitcoin (cryptocurrencies) in Belgium?

Not trading, just bought in the past and holding. And if there is tax if cashing out.

Have read several conflicting explanations on this subject, some say there is, some say there isn't. I tried private tax consultants but they seem to be charging a huge amount (hundreds of euros) for the answer. I may take a trip down to the local tax offices, but only as a last resort, it's a painful waiting exercise and they often only speak Flemish (which I don't speak)

Any help would be great, or even an affordable tax consultant, thanks

"There are no taxes on holding bitcoins." - Thanks, unfortunately there are others who say the opposite - that holdings can be taxed

If possible I need a reliable source on the above or an affordable tax consultant who can give a 100% answer on this. Thanks

There is one reliable source where you will get a definitive answer for free - your tax office. You will find the number on your last tax return.

I'm really curious as to how and on what basis, "others who say the opposite" think you would be taxed for holding an investment?

If you need a reliable source, go to your local tax office.

Go to the commune tax-help clinic and ask them.
