Switching bank accounts made easier from 1 February

21:04 31/01/2018

Moving your Belgian bank account to another provider should, in theory, become easier from today.

A new account-switching service, launching on 1 February, means all companies collecting bills from your account by direct debit will be automatically informed of your new details.

The same applies for regular payments into the account, such as your salary or child benefit. However, you may still need to inform your health insurer and any other organisation that makes less regular money transfers to you.

According to Belgian financial services federation Febelfin, 38,000 people changed banks last year and the number has been in decline in recent years.

The automatic switching service only applies to current accounts, not savings. More information can be found at www.bankswitching.be
