Speed checks to include personalised number plates
Flemish mobility minister for Ben Weyts (N-VA) has found a solution to the problem with Belgium's personalised number plates, which were not recognised by speed cameras due to a technical glitch. The problem allowed motorists with personalised plates to dodge speeding tickets for months.
In May it was announced that the personalised number plates in Belgium could not be registered by the Flemish automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, allowing thousands of motorists to dodge fines for speeding.
Weyts told De Zondag that he will invest €50,000 euros in improving the cameras. "The smart cameras are about to get a little bit smarter," said the minister, who expects the upgraded cameras to be working by next month.

This will do nothing to tackle the problem of wealthy drivers simply paying the fines and continuing to drive.
