Speed check campaign a success

10:13 11/04/2014

A campaign by the police and the Belgian Road Safety Institute (IBSR/BIVV) to encourage Belgians to identify possible spots to place speed cameras has been a resounding success. Between March 31 and April 10, more than 51,000 possible speed check locations were identified, according to the campaign website, jeflasheaussi.be/ikflitsmee.be.

The data assembled is being sent to 124 participating police zones to be judged in anonymity on their merit. Selected speed camera locations will be operational in a planned ‘marathon against excessive speed’ on Thursday April 17 from 6.00 until 6.00 on Friday April 18. Benoît Godard, spokesperson for IBSR/BIVV, said that the results of the action had been ‘very positive’. “We weren’t expecting such a success,” he said. “The main goal was to involve citizens in road safety.”
