Sonian Forest joins European nature network

14:27 14/02/2016

The Sonian Forest in Brussels has been added to the European Rewilding Network, a network that strives for more nature and wild animals in Europe, with an aim to support rewilding in Europe as a conservation tool. The recognition really puts the Sonian Forest on the map, according to a press release from the Flemish government Agency for Nature and Forests (ANB).

The European Rewilding Network (ERN), founded in 2013, now counts 42 members located in 18 European countries. The network spreads over a total of 1 million hectares where inspiring rewilding activities are taking place, allowing nature to take its course under minimal management. The animals in these areas are given every opportunity to relocate or expand their presence. One of the positive side effects of rewilding is that it creates more opportunities for nature tourism in the area.

The animals of Brussels' Sonian Forest, such as roe deer, wild boar, fox and Highland cattle, survive mostly on their own and can often be found grazing around the Forest Museum in Groenendaal. The rangers hope to also reintroduce the badger and pine marten to the woods, which would be another important step towards a more natural forest.

The Sonian Forest will be awarded a Rewilding Europe certificate later this week in the regional office of the Agency for Nature and Forests in Hoeilaart.

I think this is wonderful news. It would also be good if there were campaigns to instill some civic sense into the thousands of people who walk, cycle and jog through the woods everyday. They constantly prove they were there by discarding beer and soda tins, beer and wine bottle, bottle caps, wrappers, papers and trash of all sorts as they "enjoy" nature. It's disgusting and can be dangerous. There should be a campaign to teach people to take their trash back home with them and dump it there.
