Smart motorway lights to adapt to traffic and weather

01:00 06/02/2017

A new smart lighting system, that adjusts according to road and weather conditions, is set to line the motorways of Wallonia.

The LED system will replace the current sodium lighting and is considered to be more efficient, economical and environmentally friendly, resulting in a 30% decrease in consumption. The lights will be installed along the entire motorway network and other major routes, about 2,300km of roads in total.

The intensity of the LEDs can be controlled in real time, remotely, by a control centre. The lights will no longer be switched off continuously at night, instead the intensity will vary depending on conditions, according to RTBF.

A call for companies to oversee the installation will be launched before the summer. The objective is to begin the estimated €30 million per year contract in 2018. The contract will last 20 years.
