Sign up free for two new Brussels car-sharing schemes

07:46 28/06/2016

Drivers in Brussels can sign up this week for two new car-sharing schemes, as new entrants DriveNow and Zipcar prepare to join existing providers Cambio and Zencar.

BMW/Mini and car rental firm Sixt are launching their scheme, DriveNow, on 6 July with 150 vehicles at first, doubling to 300 by the end of the summer.

Accounts can be opened online and via a smartphone app and are currently free (normally €29) with the first 20 minutes of usage also free.

DriveNow charges €0.33 per minute while driving and €0.19 per minute when parked and the price includes petrol, insurance and free parking within the Brussels region.

Meanwhile, American car-sharing firm Zipcar is also preparing to expand to Brussels. It too is offering free sign-up before 30 June and two hours of free usage when the scheme launches.

A fleet of Peugeot 208s will be positioned around Brussels City and surrounding communes - from Uccle to Schaerbeek and Koekelberg to Wolwué-Saint-Lambert.

Both schemes use the principle of "free floating" - meaning drivers are not required to return the car to the point where they started.

Brussels mobility minister Pascal Smet opened up the market to new "free floating" car providers at the start of June. A third new entrant in the market, Car2Go, is due to launch later in the year.
