Several streets in Brussels city centre to close on New Year's Eve

Dec 29, 2015

Due to the raised terror alert level in Brussels police stations from level two to three as of Monday evening, the City has announced that it will take extra security measures on New Year's Eve, including closing off several streets in the city centre. The streets will be closed off to the public after 19.00 on 31 December, including Boulevard Anspach and Place de Brouckère where the fireworks are still set to take place, in addition to some adjoining streets, report the Brussels police.

"The side streets off Boulevard Anspach will be kept free to provide access for emergency services during the festivities," say the local police. "The party zone will therefore only be accessible via Place de la Bourse. We recommend using public transport to get to the centre of Brussels."

The police add that the metro stations De Brouckère, Sainte-Catherine, Bourse, Anneessens and Lemonnier will also be closed from 19.00 on 31 December, and advise using Central Station, Comte de Flandre or South Station instead.

"The four metro lines will run until 2.00, as will the tram lines 3, 4, 7, 19, 39, 92, 93 and 94. Trams 32 and 81 will run until 1.00, and the Noctis buses from midnight to 5.00. As every year on New Year's Eve, the metro, trams and buses are free between midnight and 5.00."

The police will provide real-time information via its twitter account @zpz polbru.
