Security gates for Brussels South train station from early 2017

16:05 17/11/2016

The Belgian railway stations Brussels South, Antwerp and Liège are to be equipped with security gates from the beginning of next year, Bruzz reports. The gates will enable Securail agents to check international high-speed train passengers and their baggage before they enter the platforms or international traffic zones, confirms federal mobility and transport minister François Bellot.

According to the minister, the security gates at the three stations are scheduled to be operational "at the beginning of 2017". He reiterated that it is not the intention to monitor all travellers, but to perform random checks for the sake of international rail traffic safety.

The federal government has already earmarked €17 million for the purchase of equipment and recruitment of additional staff to carry out the checks.
