Schaerbeek becomes latest Brussels commune to introduce drop zones for scooters

Schaerbeek has become the latest municipality in Brussels to introduce designated drop-off zones for shared scooters.

The commune is installing 58 drop zones this summer where shared scooters can be parked, in the lower neighbourhood of the municipality around the town hall, Bruzz reports.

“Shared scooters are a full part of the mobility offer and therefore deserve their place in our parking policy,” said the commune's alderwoman for mobility, Adelheid Byttebier (Groen).

“It is also necessary to keep pavements clear and ensure safety for pedestrians.”

The use of drop zones will become compulsory throughout Brussels later this year, with the legal framework having been approved by the region last summer.

For now the locations of drop zones in Schaerbeek are largely in the neighbourhoods and areas with the densest population and the highest concentration of shared scooters.

By the end of 2023, the entire municipal territory will be equipped with locations where users can leave or retrieve scooters.

Users will be informed by the provider, which will demarcate these zones as the only places where a scooter ride can be concluded, making it impossible to end a ride outside a parking zone.

The municipalities of Ixelles, Brussels-City, Saint-Gilles, Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode and Evere have already installed drop zones.

Anderlecht, Auderghem, Etterbeek, Forest, Ganshoren, Jette, Koekelberg and Watermael-Boitsfort each submitted at least one application for drop zone recognition to Brussels Mobility in March.
