Saint-Gilles to go paperless from next year

May 19, 2017

The Brussels municipality of Saint-Gilles wants to go completely paperless by 2018, writes La Capitale. The civil employees there process about 63,000 letters, invoices and other papers annually. From next year, they hope to have all paper documents fully digitized. "We need to put an end to paper waste and bureaucratic red tape for employees and citizens," says Willem Stevens, Brussels alderman for administrative simplification.

The project stems from the Brussels-Capital Region's larger administrative simplification plan 2017-2022, approved by the municipal council.

From next year, every letter, document and invoice received by the municipality will be scanned once, and only digitally shared and processed thereafter. The system should also prevent documents from getting lost.

In the long term, Saint-Gilles aims to create a fully digital archive with a lot of open data.
