Rogier tunnel closed due to falling debris

21:20 01/08/2017

The Rogier tunnel in Brussels was closed on Tuesday afternoon in the direction of Koekelberg after debris fell from the ceiling. No injuries or damaged cars were reported, say the police and fire brigade. The Botanique tunnel, which joins the Rogier tunnel, is also closed.

"We feel it is better to be safe than sorry and have therefore decided not to reopen the tunnel until 6.00 on Wednesday," says Inge Paemen, spokeswoman for Brussels Mobile. "The situation is unsafe for drivers," confirms the police on Twitter.

The tunnel's closure marks a new chapter in the ongoing saga of the deteriorating Brussels tunnels, writes Het Nieuwsblad.
