Risk of attack on EU buildings by Greek and Italian anarchists being assessed

18:31 25/04/2017

The federal agency for the assessment of terrorist risk (OCAM) is reported to be examining a threat against the Berlaymont building, which houses the European Commission, as well as offices of the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Brussels.

The threats have been made by anti-European anarchists from Greece and Italy. Last month, IMF offices in Paris received a written bomb threat, as did the offices of the German finance ministry in Berlin. The letters were apparently sent by Greek anarchists angry at the economic situation in their country, for which they blame the EU, IMF and German government.

Italian groups similar to the Greeks are also considered a possible source of attacks. OCAM said that it was checking mail being sent to the Brussels institutions.

“OCAM is advising extra vigilance, but we have to keep this in perspective,” the federal home affairs ministry told Bruzz. “We are of course paying attention, and it is the job of OCAM to analyse all forms of risk.”
