Rideshare app Uber banned in Brussels

10:52 15/04/2014

The Brussels Commercial Court has requested that alternative taxi service Uber put a stop to all its activities in Brussels, at the risk of a €10,000 fine. Uber is an American company that brings private drivers in contact with potential passengers through a smartphone app.

Taxi Association Taxis Verts filed a complaint for unfair competition, claiming that Uber does not respect tax or payment regulations and that its drivers have not been authorised by the Brussels-Capital Region.

The association has the support of transport minister Brigitte Grouwels, who already took three vehicles off the road for offering Uber services.
