Repeat animal abusers belong in prison, says minister

10:41 15/05/2017

Flemish minister for animal welfare Ben Weyts wants to see repeat animal abusers sent to prison, he told VTM News. "The number of inspections, fines and warnings has increased, but there should also be some form of punishment," said Weyts.

"Today, the maximum sentence is six months, but you do not have to go to prison in Belgium," Weyts explained. "It's frustrating to catch someone seven times for animal abuse, and give them a fine every time, only to have them turn around and get caught again. The penalties are too low. I think that repeat animal abusers should go to prison.”

The minister will therefore present a proposal for government to introduce stricter penalties in animal abuse cases.
