renewing Belgian ID card

Question

For the Brussels commune, does anybody know how far in advance identity cards can be renewed?

On the french site all I can find is that you receive a convocation determined by the system, but they don't tell you when that actually happens.

Votre carte d’identité électronique (eID) doit être renouvelée avant la fin de sa période de validité. La procédure de renouvellement est entamée automatiquement par l’administration. Vous recevez une convocation.

My 5 year old card expires mid December and I wondered if I could renew it weeks/months before it's expiration date. Anybody has any ideas?

You'll most likely get a letter telling you when you need to renew your E-Card/ID card, I'm under the impression you wait for them to contact you rather than contacting them.

My ID expires on the 20th of this month yet they only contacted me the other week about getting it renewed.

From what I understand they'll renew my E-Card straight away but I will also eventually receive an E-card + which can take up to five months to sort out.

Yes, that's what it says on the site, that they will contact you as determined automatically by the administration.

That's why I wondered if you could go there and have it done before they contact you.

At the moment i'm not in Brussels but might have to go to the dreaded Brussels commune when I get back in a couple of weeks and ask.

Usually the authorities contact you; you will probably need to have some recent passport size photos.

We live in Flemish area but we got a notification through inviting us in its automatic it's not like a passport when you have to remember they will have you in the computer and the letter will come saying bring your old one in with here it takes two visits a photo and a fee, the you can collect when they contact you.

Also they give you a temporary piece of paper whilst the card is issued so I don't think you can go before they will do it when it's due do t worry

Do not rely on the authorities - talking from my own experience. Officailly you need to start process of card renewal 45 to 30 days prior to card expiration date. This applies only if you are renewing your current E-Card. If you need to apply for the E+ card, make sure you apply for it at least 5 months prior to expiration of the current card. Once you applied for E+ card you need to receive the annex 22 as a proof of application for card E+. If you do not receive any answer from the commune, call and ask. According to the law if there is no answer from MInitrsry of Internal Affairs after 5 months, your E+ Card applicaiton is considered autopmatically approved and commune has to issue your E+ card.
