Registering at the commune

Question

Sorry if this has been asked before. I was registered by the police around 5 weeks ago and was told the commune would get back to me so that I could finalize the registration of my move. So far, I haven't heard anything back. This is in Brussels

Is this long waiting time normal

Thanks in advance for all answers

Edi

Depends a lot which commune you are. For example the communes which larger populatons such Molenbeck, Ixelles, Anderlecht, or Schaerbeek are well known to have long delays. You may have to go to the commune to make sure they got the report of the police for you. Normally they will assign you the national number and invite you by a letter via post to go and apply for the foreigner ID.

The Brussels commune (1000) is always, 2, to 3 months behind.

New registrations of non-Belgians, even those from other EU countries, have to get central clearance so the delay isn't just down to the commune.

Check with your commune. When we first registered the police came but we were out, we didn't receive any notification from the commune. When we asked at the commune a few weeks later they confirmed they had received the report and that we could continue the process. We were told that they had just checked the name was on the bell. This was a good few years ago so maybe things are tighter now.
