Recyclart in 'Museum of Photography' name dispute

19:01 19/11/2017

Brussels cultural centre Recyclart has received a legal complaint about its use of the title "Museum of Photography" - from the Charleroi museum of the same name.

Charleroi's photography museum, which has been open for 30 years, is demanding that Recyclart stop using the brand name because it risks confusing potential visitors. RTBF reports that the museum is seeking €500 in damages for each use in print and online.

Recyclart has organised several temporary exhibitions under the "Museum of Photography" banner, including at Wiels in Forest . The Brussels art non-profit says it will suspend the itinerant project until the name conflict is settled.

A group of artists and art fans have written an open letter to the Charleroi museum, accusing it of wanting to "kill" the Brussels project.

The letter says: "Of course, the Museum of Photography in Brussels is not a museum - it's clear to the photographers, it's clear to the visitors, it's clear to the organisers. The Charleroi museum's lawyers have no sense of humour."
