Record summer for Brussels airport passenger numbers

10:00 15/10/2017

Brussels Airport enjoyed a record quarter this summer - with 7.5 million passengers - but suffered a steep fall in cargo traffic because of toughened noise regulations.

The passenger figure is a 3.1% improvement on the previous record quarter, summer 2015, before the terror attacks in Paris and Brussels.

In September alone, 2.4 million passengers passed through Zaventem airport - an improvement of 6.1% on the same month in 2016.

The growth over the summer months was fuelled by holiday flights to Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia, which saw renewed interest from Belgian tourists after several years of political instability.

The Brussels Airlines flight to Mumbai and Delta's route to Atlanta also contributed to the passenger increase.

It was a different picture for cargo traffic, which declined 17%. "This decrease is due largely to the departure of some freight carriers due to the strengthening of Brussels noise standards," the airport said.

Meanwhile, if you're under 25 and have always dreamed of working in aviation, an opportunity has arisen in Brussels.

The Belgian air traffic control body Belgocontrol has launched a new recruitment campaign for aspiring air traffic controllers. Registration is open throughout October and you must be aged 18-25.

Tests will take place over the winter and early spring. The best candidates will then receive two to three years of training, in English, some of which takes place in Malmö in Sweden.
