Rail strikers face €12.50 fine

10:55 30/05/2016

The SNCB staff members taking part in the spontaneous strike action that began last Wednesday risk a fine of €12.50, confirmed HR Rail, the HR agency of the national railway company. It was deputy prime minister Kris Peeters who requested that a financial penalty be handed out to the strikers, "as agreed in the protocol between SNCB and the unions."

The socialist trade unions are not opposed to the fine, but still defend their right to strike without warning. "Announcing a general strike is counterproductive and does not help to advance our cause," said ACOD chairwoman Chris Reniers (pictured) in Het Nieuwsblad.

The €12.50 fine comes on top of the loss of wages for each day striked.
