My 14 year old has enduring acid reflux type problems after an initial infection which caused endless vomiting for 24 hours. Doctor has her on motilium etc - but only seem to make things worse.
She cries with the pain sometimes, which appears everytime she eats - although she eats only white bread and sips water now.
So, I would like to take her to a specialist. Would anyone know what is the term for a specialist in this area of the body and even perhaps s.o might have a recommendation. Many thanks

You are looking for a gastroenterologist. As she is 14 years old, you can still consult a pediatrician-gastro. The team in the Universitaire Ziekenhuis in Jette is very good. The doctors are called Vandenplas and Hauser and speak several languages. Call 02 477 60 61 for an appointment.

Last year suffered from this problem also and attended a consultant in Vilvoorde called Dr. Jan Hulstaert. He is very good and speaks perfect english. He is also attached to the clinique in Vilvoorde so if your child has to have a gastroscopy then the clinique is just around the corner. He also gave me a special diet which helped me to cut out high acid-producing foods. Of course this problem is also stress related so you should not neglect this fact too.

Make sure your child does not eat fresh bread but only toast! Every time she eats bread, let her put it into a toaster until crusty and crunchy and only when it cools off a bit may she eat it. It will alleviate the excess acidity. Also, before eating, let her drink a cup of very warm beverage to relax her stomach (potage or soup would be better than tea). She should not drink after meals! Raise her bed by 10-15 cm (the side where the head is)when she goes to sleep. This will help too. Most of all, try to find out if she is being bullied at school or has some other worry. This is by far the most frequent cause of gastro problems in young . If she is in pain do not wait for an appointment, but take her to an emergency at any hospital so that they can rule out something more serious such as an obstruction in her bowels or an inflamation etc.
best of luck

My daughter suffers from the same thing and she's only a baby! Since starting treatment on Zantac, Motilium and Gaviscon, she's gone from screaming constantly to a beautiful, happy baby. Please get the condition treated as left untreated refulx can lead to more serious problems (I've read, asked questions and researched it intensively). Go and see Professeur Geubel (?spelling) at St Luc Hospital in Woluwé. He's a gastro-enterologist, deals with adults (but I'm sure he'll see your daughter), a lovely, gentle man, highly competent and will look after you.
