Put it on expenses: Visitors to Brussels spend $367 a day

20:55 01/10/2018

Brussels might attract fewer foreign travellers than Paris or London - but those who do come here spend more money on average, according to new data revealed by Mastercard.

The global credit card provider found the average visitor to Brussels spends $367 a day (€312), compared with $301 a day in Paris, $153 in London and $147 in New York.

Business travel and company expense accounts are a contributor to the high figure in Brussels. More than half of the visits to the Belgian capital were for business and the average recorded stay was just two nights.

The Mastercard research found 29% of the average spend in Brussels is on food and drinks, 26% is on accommodation, 22% on local services such as public transport and taxis and 19% on shopping.

The French, Germans, Spanish, Americans and Brits were among the top visitors to Brussels, according to the global study.

Brussels is very expensive, more so than major European capitals. It's hard not to spend a lot of money just on basics like hotels, restaurants.
