Public sector strike on 27 February: Here's what we know

21:47 25/02/2018

It will be "difficult to move around the capital" on Tuesday, according to Brussels public transport operator Stib, due to a nationwide public sector strike by the CGSP trade union against pension reforms.

Trains, trams, metros and buses around Belgium will be affected - but the full extent of the disruption varies locally and the impact will not just be limited to transport. Here's what we know so far.

Stib

Public transport in Brussels "will possibly be seriously affected", says the Stib. It is advising travellers to seek alternative means of transport.

"The national strike will thoroughly disrupt tram, bus and metro serices and it will be difficult to move around the capital," Stib says. Real-time information will be available from 6.00 on Tuesday morning on Facebook, Twitter and via the Stib call centre on 070 23 20 00.

SNCB

There is a risk of "heavy disruption" to domestic and international rail services, the SNCB warns. The Belgian rail 24-hour strike begins at 22.00 on Monday evening. Eurostar and Thalys have not published any warning of delays or cancellations.

TEC

Disruption on the Walloon public transport network varies greatly from one province to the next, and on a route-by-route basis. In Walloon Brabant, 87% of services are expected to run, while in Hainaut and Liège provinces it's around 50%. The strike is not being widely followed in Namur and Luxembourg provinces, where 98% of services are forecast to run normally.

De Lijn

On the Flemish public transport network, drivers in Ghent and Antwerp are the most likely to support the strike. A De Lijn spokeswoman said the impact elsewhere should be limited.

Other sectors

Disruption is possible at schools, creches, the ONE and Kind en Gezin. There should be minimal effect on post and newspaper deliveries.
