Potential landlord issues

Question

I made the mistake of paying the rental deposit in cash 6 years ago and want to rectify the situation now by opening a blocked account for "guarantee locative"and using the previous cash deposit to pay rent. My landlady is very difficult and I prefer to interface with her through a lawyer -can anyone recommend a trustworthy professional in Brussels?
Thank you.

J

If you got your lawyer to "interface" with me, you'd probably find my lawyer "interfacing" back.

have you got proof of payment?

A lawyer should be the last option. A lawyer means that you will be paying for a service that you can almost certainly get for free or very cheaply elsewhere.
If you haven't got proof of payment you are likely to be on a loser. Your deposit cannot normally be used to pay the rent though, if the alternative is to return it to you, your landlady might accept that option.
Do some research first for something along the lines of 'tenant's association' - this type of question has been asked on this site many times over the years and a place near Hankar metro used to be a regular suggestion. Or start with a visit to a notaris/notaire for advice which should be free.

A lawyer, no matter how cheap, is likely to cost you more in the end than your three months deposit (unless you have a very high rent!). If you're in a situation where you need the deposit to pay the rent, then you're not in a position to hire a lawyer, unless you can find one who will work for you pro bono. You could try approaching the various law departments at the universities, or try here:

First, look at your lease. Most standard leases designate how the guarantee is to be paid. If you agreed to pay it in cash and then signed the lease you probably can't make a change now, especially if the landlord doesn't agree.
